How to support your child right now

Updated: Sep 27, 2020

You can do this.

I know that this is not exactly what you envisioned for your child in how they would experience elementary school, but hey, it's an adventure for us all. There are a variety of feelings that come up with managing your child's education (even more so than before), working, feeding your family, trying to take care of all the things, and simply showing your family you love them. It can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders right now, but you are doing okay. It might be hard to look at things from a different perspective, but I challenge you to. What are the things you are enjoying about this wild time? Extra moments with your child? Seeing what kind of learner they are in the school setting- literally right in front of you? Game nights or evening walks? There are spaces to stop and reflect on the goodness of this pandemic, I promise.

So how can you support your child? Spend time with them, have those conversations or play a little longer, because you can. You have been given the gift of time and I dare you to use it to your advantage. Find out how your child most feels loved by taking the Love Language Quiz and love them extra hard. Put down the device when work and school hours are over, and make some new memories, or sit together in silence, whatever works best for your tribe. Take a deep breathe and count to five as they get frustrated that they can't see their friends or don't understand the task their teacher asks of them. You can do this. No pressure, but modeling your coping skills to your child right now are more essential than ever. They are still learning, even if they are not in the walls of their school. I believe in you.
